Hello, and welcome to my blog, The Purple Thread. I hope you enjoy it, learn from it, and tell your friends, family, and colleagues about it. I in turn look forward to learning from you.
First, a bit about this blog and why I chose the name Purple Thread for it. If you glance over to the right side of the page, you’ll see the quote by Epictetus upon which the theme of this blog is based. Couched in that archaic style of language that today seems quaint and a bit foreign to us, this simple but elegant proclamation expresses concisely a philosophy of existence that cuts across political, religious, socio-economic, and cultural lines. They are truly words to live by, no matter what your belief system is.
Before we expand upon Epictetus’ ideas and how we can apply them to our daily lives, I would like to paraphrase the above quote so that we as 21st century citizens can better comprehend his words.
“You see yourself as a small, insignificant member of our society. Therefore you feel that you should try to be like everyone else, to conform, and to not distinguish yourself from the rest. But I wish to be exceptional, striving to realize my potential so that I may better serve others. Why would you want me to remain ordinary? And if I did, how could I be exceptional?”
